Volt Amp Co - Aston Electronics

Oli Brown Over-drive Super OB 100

words By Oli Brown

For a while now I've been searching for an amp with great depth and clarity in its clean channel. I've always felt that within the amps that I've experienced there's always been some colouration to the clean sound making it feel for me that the amp is taking precedence for making the guitar tone rather than the guitar itself. This is what I love about the volt overdrive super amp. It's such an honest amp. The individuality of every guitar I've used on it completely stands out really separating tones. Having the ability to hear what my guitars are able to do is amazing, it helped me in crafting songs and finding tones to help emphasise an atmosphere with a song.

This really is just scratching the surface of this amp. I have always relied on overdrive pedals for lead tones and to boost my amp when needed, but for me any drive pedal is completely unnecessary with this amps overdrive. It sounds huge! I've A/B'd my old overdrive pedals all against the amps natural overdrive channel and none compare; not the depth, sustain or grit that this channel has on its own.

I have a FET boost built inside which I use as my solo button. It boosts the volume and overdrive of the amp giving me that extra push in the mix for when I need it.

I was actually looking at various other #umble style amplifiers before I heard of Volt Amp Co. I was lucky that a friend owns a few different brands. But he then put me on to Geoff and his company suggesting to try the Volt amps. Geoff was kind enough to invite us over and we took the other clones along with us to compare. After hours of A/B'ing back and forth all the amps none of the other highly rated amplifiers had the versatility, tone and power that the Overdrive Super has.

In the studio recording the latest album “Here I Am" every single guitar tone that is on it all comes from the Volt Overdrive Super, we never needed anything else.

Thanks Geoff. http://olibrownband.co.uk

The Over-drive Super OB ® is only available as 100watt head or 112 (1x12 supplied with Celestion K-100 Speaker )

There is also a 2 x 12" Open back cab option supplied with Celestion G12-65 speakers

There are many features with the ODV S-OB.

The amplifier has been setup to have slightly less gain than the RR model using a 5751 valve / tube in the first stage making the amplifier more harmonically rich when driven with the FET boost

The built in FET boost, is foot switchable with a front panel mounted level control located just above the input jack socket.  This feature was specially incorporated for Oli. It is equipped with TubeSync valve bias engine to control and monitor the output valves. There is a valve cathode driven effects loop, with a -10db trim to interface with a wide variety of effects units. The loop operates in series mode, but has the added feature of being switchable in/out from the back panel. This enables the loop to be gain-matched much more easily, or allows the amp to run in its purest mode when required, ideal for studio work.

There are a number of pre-amp tone shaping switches but unlike most “D” types there is no Bright switch, it proved unnecessary (Treble and Presence have got it covered). There is a Mid-Boost (footswitch able) and a Deep switch. The character of the amp and behaviour of the tone controls are all affected significantly by the Rock/Jazz switch. The Rock setting has more gain and bite the Jazz has a sweeter smooth drive. The overdrive sound is produce by adding gain stages to this core tone, and therefore shares the same tone controls (and all boost options).

Two controls are employed to control the overdrive section. The first is Gain, which affects how much signal is fed to the overdrive stages giving you that drive tone. The second is Level; this is used to balance your OD sound level to your clean level.

There are various stages of extra boost available from the amp which work in both clean and OD modes, as mentioned earlier there is a Mid-Boost which alters the mid/treble content for a more focused tone, there is also a Pre-Amp-Boost which bypasses the tone stack for an increase in gain. As an extra feature, the amount of Pre-Amp-Boost is variable via a discrete chassis pot near the V1 valve.

The Master Volume affects both clean and OD sounds and sets the overall amp volume, and unlike many “D” type amps it is positioned post effects loop instead of pre. In some amps of this type it is the Effects Return that ultimately determines the amp's maximum volume, not here. Consequently with the ODS-OB, turning up the Master Volume during the gig, won't lead to clipping the front end of the effect (once the loop has been set up).

The amplifier incorporates a built in valve cathode driven effects loop, with a -10db Trim to interface with a wide variety of effects units. The loop operates in series mode, but has the added feature of being switchable in/out from the back panel. This enables the loop to be gain-matched much more easily, or allows the amp to run in its purest mode when required. Ideal for studio work.

Another feature is the valve driven Accutronics 3 spring Reverb, a high quality unit which has a short chassis, positioned to remove the chance of any RF interference from hi-voltages etc. within the amp. It delivers a luscious warm but open reverb, controllable via a rear mounted pot. Note - the switch that defeats the loop also defeats the reverb return.

Please take note that the amp is entirely hand wired using traditional methods employing eyelet boards, common star grounding and point-to-point wiring. Remember also that the audio signal path is' tubes all the way through', no op-amps, no IC's and definitely no digital !

The output stage features separate 4, 8 and 16 ohm outputs, Full and half power switch AC and standby switches and a detachable IEC power cable socket with external fuse.

The chassis is made of hi-grade aluminium, which is anodized for corrosion protection.

All valves, transformers or large components are mounted directly onto the chassis.

By using extensive lengths of shielded internal signal cable, and meticulous positioning of the audio and power lines, the amp is quiet and virtually free of hum at all operating levels.

A chassis mounted DC fan is added to remove heat, which is switchable for silent studio operation.

All amps are given a minimum 100 hour burn in period on factory valves, to stabilise new components, plus detect any early life component failure, then it's re-valved and rebiased ready for delivery.

Every amp is delivered with a 2 year limited warranty against defects or component failure for the original registered owner. This also covers factory delivered tube failures up to 3 months after amplifier purchase. Please note- this does not include shipping costs.

The footswitch deploys the Overdrive, the Pre-Amp-Boost, the Mid-Boost and FET Boost each separately or in any combination of the four you like. These features are also switchable from the chassis with the footswitch disconnected; with the exception of the FET boost which is foot switch only control.
